 MINING ACTIVITIES IN THE DISTRICT

In mineral sector the district of Rayagada lacks many campaigns. Bauxite, Black Granite, Red Ochre, Graphites, Manganese, Quartz, etc. are the mineral deposits of the district with Gem Stones which have recently come into existence. The district even offers a high level of Bauxite occurrences. Gibbsite is the main aluminous mineral. The resource of Bauxite in the district is more than formidable 600 Metric Tons. Nishikhal manganese deposit is the most essential, single largest deposit in the area renders with a reserve of nearly 10.2 Metric Tons. It is currently being mined by OMC and fed to the Visakhapatnam steel plant. Graphite occupies a prominent and influential position in the district concerning its extension, reserve, and number of deposits. Nearly 150 occurrences of graphite have been recognized. Limestone occurrences in the district have been reported from various regions, and it occurs as lenticular bands associated with calc-granulite. The district has propitious potential as regards the events of dimension and decorative stones. The massive granite and charnockite serve as excellent construction materials extensively used in foundation structures, roads, and buildings.
