Art is an expression of all the emotions residing in someone’s heart, usually, the materials used to unravel these emotions are pen, paper, colours, etc. But in our Odisha, a unique type of art form is developed at Puri and it spreads all over the world. To carve a sand sculpture, the raw material is the only clean and fine-grained sand mixed with water.

Although not historically proved, there is an interesting story in the Odisha myths regarding the origin of sand sculpture like follows:-
"Poet Balaram Das, the author of Dandi Ramayan was a great devotee of Lord Jagannath. Once during Ratha Yatra (Car Festival), he tried to climb the chariot of Lord Jagannath to offer his prayer. Since he was not allowed by the priests of the chariot to climb it and was also insulted by them. With great frustration and humiliation, he came to the beach (Mahodadhi) and carved the statues of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra on the Golden sand. Then there he started praying and worshipping these statues. His devotion was so strong and deep that the original statues vanished from the chariot and appeared at that place where Balaram das was worshipped."
Although it has not been proven that the above stanza is completely true it is evident that people who resided in Puri were acquainted with Sand Art from the period of poet Balaram Das which is around the 14th Century

First of all, Compact the sand you are working on. The sand should be extremely fine. Squash the sand in and go on pushing it upward as well as inwards and then condensate it into the smallest possible space. Mark out the outline of what you want to carve. You can use a knife to carve out the outline, you can also use wooden tools to draw out the outline on the sand. Smooth the sculpture using a flatwater tool. Thereafter, Add details to your Sculpture.
